Kitchen Removal and Installation: The On-Site Sequence
What happens from the last day with the old kitchen to the final cabinet adjustment, and which parts need licensed trades or confirmed site conditions.
Kitchen removal and installation is a sequence of connected tasks, not one long day where the old room disappears and the new one is immediately complete. Services, site conditions, cabinetry, benchtops, appliances and finishes each need the right point in the programme.
The sequence below is a general guide. Your written scope should state who is responsible for each trade and the order that applies to the room.
1. Confirm the room is ready
Before work begins, the cabinetry design and selections should be sufficiently resolved, required approvals obtained, site access confirmed and owner-supplied appliances available when required.
Clear the cabinets and work area, protect items that remain, establish a safe delivery route and set up a temporary food-preparation area away from the work.
2. Isolate services
Electricity, gas and water are isolated or made safe by the applicable licensed trades before demolition affects them. Identify any service that must remain live elsewhere in the home.
Do not treat service isolation as a cabinet-removal detail. It is a safety-critical trade responsibility that needs to be booked within the scope.
3. Remove the old kitchen
Doors, appliances, benchtops and cabinets are removed in a controlled sequence. Retained floors, walls, windows and adjoining rooms need protection. Waste follows the agreed site or building process.
In apartments, removal may be limited by working hours, lift bookings and common-area protection. In terraces or homes without side access, the carry route may run through the property.
4. Check the opened room
Once old cabinetry is gone, previously concealed walls, floors and services can be inspected. Out-of-square walls may already be allowed for in custom dimensions, but damaged substrate, leaks, unsafe wiring or other hidden conditions need to be addressed by the responsible trade before they are covered again.
Pause for conditions that affect the new work
Installing over an unresolved leak, unsafe service or unsuitable substrate does not make the programme faster. Confirm the remedy and any change to the agreed scope before continuing.
5. Complete rough-in and preparation
If services move, the relevant rough-in work is completed for the confirmed appliance and fixture locations. Wall, floor or structural preparation is carried out as scoped. Positions should be checked against the final cabinetry information rather than estimated from an earlier concept.
6. Install the cabinetry
Cabinets are brought into the room, positioned, levelled and fixed. Tall units, base units, panels, fillers and overheads are aligned, then doors, drawers and internal hardware are fitted or adjusted.
Made-to-measure cabinetry still needs careful installation because walls, floors and ceilings are not perfectly uniform. Scribes, panels and finishing details connect the manufactured joinery to the actual room.
7. Measure and install benchtops
The benchtop process depends on the material. Some surfaces are measured or templated after base cabinets are fixed; fabrication then occurs before installation. Cut-outs, joins, edge profiles, overhangs and access must match the confirmed design.

8. Connect appliances and services
The applicable licensed trades connect plumbing, electrical and gas items within their scope. Appliances are installed according to the manufacturer requirements, with ventilation, clearances and service access preserved.
Cabinet doors and drawers are checked around appliance openings. A refrigerator or dishwasher door that collides with an adjacent handle is a planning issue that should have been resolved before manufacture, but final on-site adjustment still matters.
9. Install the splashback and complete finishes
Splashback installation follows the selected tile, glass, stone or porcelain process. Painting, flooring interfaces, silicone and other finishing items are completed in the agreed order.

10. Adjust, inspect and hand over
Doors, drawers, runners, handles and visible panels are checked and adjusted. The agreed items are inspected, care information is provided and any handover actions are recorded.
