As a Sydney planning guide, a short run of new or replacement kitchen cabinets typically costs $2,000–$7,000, cabinetry for a whole kitchen in melamine $12,000–$25,000, and a whole kitchen in 2-pac $20,000–$40,000. These are planning ranges, not a quote: the price for your cabinetry is confirmed in a written quote after a measure of the room.

ScopeTypical range (AUD)
A short run of new or replacement cabinets (1–3 metres)$2,000–$7,000
Cabinetry for a whole kitchen in melamine$12,000–$25,000
Cabinetry for a whole kitchen in 2-pac$20,000–$40,000

Typical Sydney prices, supplied and installed, at about $1,200–$2,800 per metre of cabinetry. A planning guide rather than a quote. Reviewed October 2026.

Kitchen cabinetry is usually the largest share of a kitchen budget, because it is designed, cut, assembled and installed to suit the room. Most of the difference between two quotes for the same kitchen lives here.

What drives the cost of kitchen cabinets

Metres of cabinetry. Price follows the run: base cabinets, overheads, tall pantry and appliance towers, and any island. Tall cabinets and islands cost more per metre than overheads.

Carcass and door material. Melamine carcasses with melamine or laminate doors are the most economical. 2-pac painted doors cost more because of the spraying and finishing; timber veneer sits higher again.

Door profile. Flat panels are simplest. Shaker, profiled and glass-front doors take more work, and handleless channels add machining.

Drawers and fittings. A bank of drawers costs more than a cupboard of the same width. Pull-out pantries, corner systems, bin drawers, cutlery inserts and soft-close hardware all add to the price.

Installation. Scribing to uneven walls, bulkheads, high ceilings and difficult access add time on site.

Replacing cabinets or the whole kitchen

Replacing a short run of cabinets, such as a new pantry or an island, is priced on its own. Replacing all the cabinets while keeping the layout avoids most plumbing and electrical changes, but the benchtop and splashback usually come off with the old cabinets and need replacing too. The kitchen renovation cost guide covers a full renovation.

Where to save, and what not to cut

Ways to save:

  • Mix finishes. 2-pac where it is seen, melamine inside the pantry and in overheads.
  • Choose drawers for the working zones. Use cupboards where you store bulky or rarely used items.
  • Keep the layout. New cabinets in the same footprint keep the trades simple.

What not to cut:

  • Hardware. Hinges and runners are opened thousands of times.
  • Edges and finishes near water. The sink run takes the most wear.
  • The measure. Cabinetry made to estimates needs fillers and fixes on site.

How to get an accurate cabinetry quote

Send photos, rough measurements, your suburb and a list of what the cabinets need to hold: appliances, pantry stock and anything tall. Say whether the benchtop and splashback stay or go.

H&R makes the cabinetry in its Guildford workshop and installs it. See how kitchen cabinetry runs, or read about cabinet materials, hardware and storage.

Frequently asked questions

What does cabinetry cost per metre?

The note under the table gives a typical Sydney range per metre. The real figure depends on how much of the run is drawers, tall cabinets or an island.

Is 2-pac worth the extra cost?

2-pac gives a smooth painted finish in almost any colour. Melamine and laminate are durable, easier on the budget and suit pantries and laundries well.
