A built-in or walk-in wardrobe is priced on its size, the doors and finish, and how much is going on inside. Two wardrobes of the same width can differ a lot once the drawers, shoe storage and lighting are counted.
What drives the cost of a wardrobe
Size and type. A two-door built-in is the simplest. Three- and four-door robes, then walk-ins, add cabinetry, and a walk-in is a fit-out of a whole room.
The doors. Hinged, sliding and mirrored doors each cost differently. Shaker, flat-panel and handleless profiles, and melamine, timber or painted fronts, change the price again.
The interior. Hanging rails and shelves are the most economical. Drawer banks, shoe racks, pull-out accessories and soft-close hardware add to it.
Islands, display and lighting. A central island, glass-front display cabinets and lit shelving are what turn a walk-in into a dressing room, and they carry the most cost.
The room. Sloping ceilings, bulkheads and uneven walls need scribing, and floor-to-ceiling robes need careful fitting.
| What you choose | Tends to cost more | Tends to cost less |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Walk-in or dressing room | Two-door built-in |
| Doors | Mirrored, glass-front or painted | Melamine, hinged or sliding |
| Interior | Drawer banks, shoe storage, pull-outs | Hanging rails and shelves |
| Features | Island, display cabinets, lighting | None |
Where to save, and what not to cut
Ways to save:
- Put drawers where you use them. One drawer bank and more hanging space often suits a household better than drawers everywhere.
- Choose melamine inside. Spend on the doors and fronts that are seen.
- Use sliding doors in tight rooms. They save floor space as well as the cost of a separate walk-in.
What not to cut:
- Hardware. Drawers and doors are opened every day.
- Floor-to-ceiling height where you can. The top shelf holds what you use least, and it saves dusting.
What these choices look like in finished wardrobes
- A full walk-in fit-out. The walk-in wardrobe combines made-to-measure hanging, drawers, shelving, shoe storage and display cabinetry.
- A dressing room with an island. The white walk-in dressing room has illuminated display cabinetry, brass fittings and a fluted central island.
- Floor-to-ceiling glass-front robes. The white glass-front wardrobe lines a walk-through dressing room with a central drawer island.
- Bedroom walls with storage built in. The grey bedroom storage combines full-height wardrobes, drawers and television joinery.
How to get an accurate wardrobe quote
Send photos of the room, the wall or walk-in measurements, your suburb and a note on what the wardrobe needs to hold: long and short hanging, folded clothes, shoes and accessories.
H&R makes wardrobes in its Guildford workshop and installs them. See how wardrobes and storage run, or read the custom joinery cost guide for other built-in storage.
Frequently asked questions
Built-in or walk-in: which is better value?
A built-in gives the most storage for the money. A walk-in needs a room to give up, but it holds more and is easier to use.
Can you fit a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Made-to-measure cabinetry can follow the slope, with shorter hanging or shelves under the low side.
