The brief here was contrast that reads as calm rather than busy. We grounded the room in dark base cabinetry and kept the upper storage lighter, so the eye settles instead of jumping. The two tones do the work that a black-and-white scheme needs to avoid feeling clinical, and the balance ties the kitchen back to the rest of the home.
Storage does most of the quiet work. The island carries everyday preparation and a spot to sit, the upper cabinets hold what you reach for less often, and the cabinetry around the appliances is built in so the bench stays clear. We set the main preparation zone by the window, which puts good light over the part of the kitchen that gets used most.
Every cabinet, panel and join was designed, built and installed by our own team in Sydney. Keeping the work in-house means the proportions, finishes and storage are measured to the actual room and the way the household lives in it, rather than fitted from a flat-pack range. That is how we approach every kitchen.
