As a Sydney planning guide, a laundry renovation that keeps the layout and replaces the cabinetry, benchtop, tiles and tub typically costs $10,000–$18,000, one with more joinery and some plumbing changes $18,000–$28,000, and a reconfigured or relocated laundry with high-end finishes $28,000–$40,000 or more. These are planning ranges, not a quote: the price for your laundry is confirmed in a written quote after a measure of the room.

A laundry renovation is mostly cabinetry, a benchtop, the trough and the trades around them. The biggest jump in price comes from moving the trough or the appliances, because that brings in plumbing, drainage and electrical work.

What drives the cost of a laundry renovation

Keeping or changing the layout. New cabinetry, a benchtop and a trough in the same positions is the simplest job. Moving the trough, the washer or the dryer, or relocating the laundry, adds licensed trades and often waterproofing and tiling.

The cabinetry run. Base cabinets, overheads, tall broom and linen storage, and cabinets around a stacked washer and dryer all add to the run.

The benchtop. Laminate keeps the budget down and wipes clean. Porcelain and natural stone stand up well to water and detergent at a higher price.

Tiles and the trough. Splashback tiles, floor tiles and the trough and tapware you choose vary widely.

The room. A cupboard laundry in an apartment has different access and strata considerations from a separate room in a house.

Where to save, and what not to cut

Ways to save:

  • Keep the trough and appliances where they are. It is the biggest single saving.
  • Use laminate for the benchtop. It suits a laundry well and keeps the budget for storage.
  • Stack the washer and dryer. In a small room it frees bench and cupboard space without making the room bigger.

What not to cut:

  • Waterproofing and licensed plumbing. A laundry is a wet area; any changes need the right trades.
  • Ventilation for the dryer. Plan where the moisture goes.
  • Tall storage. A broom and linen cupboard is often the most used part of the room.

What a laundry renovation covers

A typical H&R laundry renovation covers custom laundry cabinets, overhead cupboards, tall and broom storage, a benchtop, the trough and tapware, the washer and dryer layout, removal of the old laundry and full installation. Compare quotes on that same list, and check who is responsible for plumbing, electrical, waterproofing and tiling.

How to get an accurate laundry quote

Send photos of the laundry, rough measurements, your suburb, the sizes of your washer and dryer, and whether the trough needs to move.

H&R makes the cabinetry in its Guildford workshop and installs it, with the plumbing and electrical stages coordinated. See how laundry renovations run, or read the kitchen cabinet cost guide for how cabinetry is priced.

Frequently asked questions

Can a laundry fit in a cupboard?

Often, yes. Made-to-measure cabinets can fit a stacked washer and dryer, a small trough and storage into a narrow space.

What benchtop suits a laundry?

Porcelain and natural stone handle water and detergent well. Laminate keeps the budget down and still wipes clean.
