As a Sydney planning guide, kitchen design on its own typically costs $1,000–$2,500 for a layout plan and concept drawings, and $2,500–$5,000 for a detailed design with full drawings and selections. These are planning ranges, not a quote: what a design costs depends on the room, the detail you need and who will build the kitchen.
| Scope | Typical range (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Layout plan and concept drawings for one kitchen | $1,000–$2,500 |
| Detailed design with full drawings and selections | $2,500–$5,000 |
Typical Sydney fees for design on its own; makers often include the design when they build the kitchen. Reviewed October 2026.
Kitchen design is the stage that turns a room and a wish list into a layout, drawings and selections that can be priced, made and installed. The fee depends on how far the design goes and whether it is a separate service or part of the build.
What a kitchen design fee should include
A layout plan. The working zones, the island or peninsula, the pantry and where the appliances sit, drawn against a measure of the room.
Concept drawings. Enough of each wall drawn to judge proportions, heights and how the kitchen reads from the living area.
Full drawings and selections. Elevations of each wall with cabinet sizes, appliance gaps, panel returns and handle positions, plus the door finish, benchtop, splashback and hardware. This is the level of detail a maker needs to build the kitchen as drawn.
What drives the cost of kitchen design
The size and shape of the room. An island, a butler's pantry or a kitchen that opens to living and dining needs more drawing than a single run.
How many options you want. Two or three layouts to compare take longer than refining one.
How much detail is needed. A concept for a builder to price is lighter than a set of drawings ready for manufacture.
Changes after sign-off. Revisions once selections are made can mean redrawing several walls.
| What you ask for | Tends to cost more | Tends to cost less |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Full drawings and selections | Layout plan only |
| Options | Several layouts compared | One layout refined |
| Room | Island, pantry, open-plan | Single run or galley |
| Timing | Changes after sign-off | Decisions settled early |
How design is priced with H&R
With H&R, the measure and the written quote are free. Detailed drawing plans are a paid design stage, drawn against the measured room so the plans carry the dimensions, appliance gaps and details needed to make and install the kitchen.
Whoever you use, ask how the fee works: whether it is fixed or hourly, how many revisions it covers and who owns the drawings.
Where to save, and what not to cut
Ways to save:
- Arrive with a clear brief. Photos of kitchens you like, a list of appliances and how you cook shorten the design.
- Settle the layout before the finishes. Moving the island after the selections are made costs more time than choosing a door colour.
What not to cut:
- An accurate measure. Drawings made from estimates cause problems at manufacture.
- Appliance specifications. Exact models set the cabinet gaps; change them late and the drawings change too.
What good design looks like in finished kitchens
- An island that works from both sides. The timber floor island kitchen runs a long island in front of full-width tall cabinetry.
- A two-tone scheme drawn as one room. The grey and white kitchen pairs a grey waterfall island with gloss white and charcoal cabinetry and a sculptural pendant.
How to get an accurate kitchen design quote
Send photos of the room, rough measurements, your suburb and what you want the kitchen to do: how many people cook, the appliances you have chosen and any must-haves. Say whether you want design only or design with the kitchen made and installed.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a kitchen design take?
It depends on the room and how quickly selections are made. A single layout settled early moves faster than several options and late changes.
Can I use someone else's design?
Yes. A maker will check the drawings against their own measure of the room before pricing and making the cabinetry.
